As an experienced gun builder I have bought and studied many gun builder books and I can say without reservation that "The Gunsmith of Grenville County" is the best . It is rich in illustrations and photos.

I own all of the books on the subject and all of the videos as well. This book by Peter Alexander is by far the best. Paired with his video series of the same name, they are a priceless resource. Having said that, $198 is too much. Find a cheaper copy or wait a bit and Scurlock will re-publish it. It is far too precious to remain out of print forever. Peter is a master craftsman who has been blessed with the ability to teach what he knows to others which really is a rare trait. My copy of this book is pretty worn but I would not part with it. I hope that Peter will re-release his videos in the DVD format too.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in the study of early American weaponry and craftsmanship. I have built several traditional rifles using only this book as reference.

I have always regarded "Recreating the American Longrifle" by Buchele, Schumway, and Alexander to be the best all round how to book on making a longrifle from scratch. Now I have to admit that this book by Alexander builds on his previous effort with Buchele and Schumway and goes beyond. I never bought this book before because I was inclined to believe the older work was the best. After seeing the first time effort at building a rifle from a friend who had only read this newer book I knew I had to purchase it.

There is good new material to a degree, but most importantly the illustrations and careful explanations of the material makes this something that any newcomer to the work will need as a reference. Some of the photos are not as sharp as I would prefer, but the illustrations are more than adequate to acquaint the novice with the art. There are a number of points even the more experienced builder would benefit from as well. I have to give this a 5 on quality and content.

I have just glanced at the book but it looks like it is very thorough and easy to understand. I'm anxious to find the time to study it in depth.
